TOPIC: THE PERMEABILITY AND URGENCY OF THERAPY DURING THE PERINATAL PERIOD
The sense of urgency as well as an increased “permeability” between the unconscious and conscious, inside and outside, can contribute to the efficacy of psychodynamic psychotherapy during the perinatal period. Women seeking help postpartum are often in a near-desperate state of mind. A therapist available to explore what pregnancy and childbirth evoke can readily help recovery and psychological growth. Three psychoanalysts, members of the SPRING Project, a CFS-sponsored outreach initiative focused on maternal mental health, will present their observations about the unique and pivotal features of helping women during this turbulent time.
